So many believers have a fuzzy and confused understanding of the Word of God in which they put together a few verses here and there and make up their own belief system. Your respect for God can be measured by your respect for the Word of God. We do not worship the Bible, we worship Jesus Christ. We revere the Bible because it is the Word of God, the original Hebrew and Greek being without error and in it God reveals the truth about Himself and the truth about humanity.†
Hebrews 4:12-14 ďFor the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.Ē Why is Godís Word compared to a double edged sword? Today we would have used a surgeonís scalpel instead to make this analogy. But back in that day the sword was used for operating on a body, they didnít have the tools of modern doctors. When our body needs surgery, the surgeons scalpel becomes the tool and for some their deliverance. Godís Word is alive, meaning that it is more than words on a page, these words have Godís authority and power and strength behind them and God will make them come to pass. It means that Godís Word produces fruit when it enters into your heart and mind, it will change your life. 1 Peter 1:23 ďBeing born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.Ē
When the Word of God acts, God acts. When the Word of God delivers, God delivers. When the Word of God heals, God heals. They are one. Hebrews 4:12-13 tell us three things the Word of God does, when you read it, believer it and obey it. ďFor the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.Ē
First, it stretches us out on Godís operating table. There on the operating table, you are most susceptible to germs and infection as we see proven even today in our modern hospitals as tens of thousands every year pick up germs and diseases in the hospital that they didnít enter with. When you open the Word of God, Satan is there, the flesh is there and they immediately try to neutralize the impact of the Word of God on your life. The moment the Word of God starts to penetrate into your heart and mind, Satan immediately works to try and neutralize the effect of the Word of God. First, he will work to keep you from reading the Word. But if he canít do that, he will try to distract you so that you do not read with comprehension. He will get you distracted but if he canít get you in that, then he will try to bring doubt to what you are reading. He will do all and whatever he can every time to neutralize and stop the Word of God from doing the surgery that God wants it to do in our lives.
In fact, this interference by Satan is described in the parable of the sower. Matthew 13:19 ďWhen any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.Ē
Hebrews 4:13 ďNeither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.Ē The Word of God is like an x-ray. It opens you and exposes everything in you, who you are, everything about you. When you are lying on Godís operating table, the Word can separate fact from fiction and reality from fantasy. What do I mean?
We can go for a long time thinking we are just fine and spiritually great. We can go for a long time thinking when it comes to our spiritual life, we are very healthy and doing fine and donít need help. Then you go to the doctor and he looks at the x-ray and he says, ďI have to operate immediately.Ē You reply, ďIím fine.Ē At this moment there is no pretense and lying and saying, no, I donít need this surgery. But when you are sitting on Godís operating table, laid out before God who can see all things and nothing is hidden from His eyes, in front of His word and all issues in your life are wide open and the things you donít want to face and wide open, and your pride and self-satisfaction and smugness hit you in the face and you are confronted by Him, with His own standards, not mine or someone elseís and the doors I try to keep locked are opened wide and we are laid bare with His Word before His eyes, we are forced to conclude like the Apostle Paul that there is nothing good that dwells within us, within our flesh. I am forced to conclude that the only good thing about me is Jesus Christ, the only good thing in me is Jesus Christ.
The Word of God not only stretches us on Godís operating table and lays us bare before Him like an x-ray, but it cuts us where we need to be cut. No one who has been through surgery comes out saying, how great an experience that was, I really enjoyed it. That was great. But by the same token, no one who has been through Godís operating table and had His surgery performed on them, to make correction and healing in their lives that will not say, ďI am so glad that God put me on His operating table and laid me bare and cut out of my life the things that would have destroyed me.
When the sword works in our life, it is the job of the double edged sword, to not only cut us open, but also to dissect us and it doesnít just divide between the joints and marrow, in fact in the human body the joints and marrow are not in contact with each other and donít need to be separated. The point of the passage is this. The Word of God cuts through to the bone and it penetrates deep into the inner recesses of our inner being. It means that the Word of God doesnít miss a thing in us.
The separation of the Word of God is not to separate one part form the other, but that it goes very deep into every cell in your spiritual life and it stops at nothing until all is brought into the open and to expose the evil, the sin, the wickedness in us and then to cut and to separate it out of us. That is the purpose of the Word of God in our lives. When you are on Godís operating table there can be no pretense before God in any area of your life. That is why the devil and the flesh donít want you to stay very long before the Word of God and stay on that operating table long enough for God to cut out of you and I all the things that He needs to remove out of our life so that we can be pure and sanctified before Him. The Word of God judges not only your thoughts but even your hidden motives. What you have planned in your head that nobody else knows, God knows. When you open the Word of God it immediately judges your motives. The writer says that the Word of God sits in judgment of us, your thoughts, your activities and even your motives and secret intentions. It sorts out reality from fiction and separates them. It says, this is right; it is of the spirit, this is wrong, it is of the flesh. But oh how our flesh doesnít want to hear that it is wrong or canít have its way for it is stubborn and independent and rebellious for it wants its own way. We have to remember that the fleshly mind has taken its very nature and character from Lucifer and is in league with him. So what the devil loves, your flesh loves and what you flesh loves, Satan loves. Conversely what the devil hates, your flesh hates.
Example: When you are driving alone on the highway and you are all alone and someone does something to you, like cut your off or something that gets to you. What ever you do, think, say or whatever, God sees and knows it all and the Word of God, when you next come to His operating table sits in judgment and it judges what you thought and what you did and it tells you that you did wrong and that your thoughts and actions werenít right before God and did not bring Him glory. And it brings you under conviction. I can unquestionably vouch for that.
The Word of God speaks to you when you read it and if it is in your heart and mind and it tells you when you have done that which is displeasing to the Lord and failed to live up to and by His standards, which is His Word. Scripture says you will hear a voice behind you saying, ďthis is the wayÖĒ Isaiah 30:21 ďAnd thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.Ē
You may try to hide the true self from your public self, but the Word of God penetrates and exposes all that and lays it bare and the sword begins to cut away these security systems and self-defense systems and sorts out what is true and what is fantasy if we will allow the Holy Spirit to take the Word of God and do His work in our life. Of course you can always, as most do, quench the Holy Spirit and cut Him off. But God told us to ďQuench not the SpiritĒ in 1 Thessalonians 5:19. Why did He have to tell us that? Is it not because that is what is the normal, natural thing for us to do, when we are walking and yielding to our flesh instead of the Spirit of God? That word Quench in the Greek means donít put out, donít extinguish the Holy Spirit, donít quench His voice, His conviction, His dealing with you.
We are also given another warning about not turning away our ears from hearing the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 4:19. ďAnd grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.Ē The Greek word for grieve means donít distress, donít cause heaviness, grief or sorry to the Holy Spirit by doing that which is displeasing to Him. He is the one who is responsible for your salvation, to keep you and see that you make it to heaven. When the Holy Spirit leaves a man, he is doomed. You canít convict yourself, you canít bring yourself to repentance, you canít desire God without the working of the Holy Spirit in your life. And it is the work of the Holy Spirit that brings the new birth. And that is why Jesus warned us that every other sin we could commit would be forgiven, but the one who sins against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. That means you canít be saved for you have a sin against God that He will not forgive you of. Matthew 12:31 ďWherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.Ē It is beyond the scope of this teaching to deal with that issue, but the point is of how important the Holy Spirit is to our salvation and how important it is that we hear His voice and allow Him to correct us and keep us right before God by allowing Him to continually operate on our lives.
Jeremiah 17:9 ďThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?Ē You heart is more deceitful than anything else, above all things. We have to understand the truth about our real fallen nature for only that will lead us to living a life of repentance and holiness before God. †
You might ask, ďYou mean you donít trust yourself?Ē That is correct. Our flesh is not trustworthy. But what we cannot do for ourselves, the Word of God will do for us, if we will allow Him to. The Holy Spirit, using the Word of God will lay us out on Godís operating table, x-ray us and then cut and operate on us to take out of us that which would destroy our lives spiritually and then He heals and restores us. There is not a surgeon worth a plug nickel that would operate on and cut open a patient and then not sew him/her back up so the wound may heal and the person can be restored to full health and strength. Anybody can take a knife and operate and cut someone apart, but can you do it without doing more harm and damage than good and then can you put them back together so that they can heal. That is what the Word of God will do in our lives if we spend time in it, being open to the Spirit and asking Him to work within us that which is pleasing to God. It wonít do an ounce of good to the unregenerate sinner who is not searching or seeking God that God is not revealing Himself to. It will be dead words, a dead letter that is of no value but to give head knowledge which does not lead to salvation.
The Holy Spirit, using the Word of God doesnít just lay us on the table and cut out the bad, but He puts us back together to restore us to health. God cuts out what He needs to cut out and then He binds up our wounds and heals us.
Now it is our nature to try and run away and hide form the one we think knows too much about us. It is human nature, but we have to understand that God already knows everything about us that can be known, more than we know or understand about ourselves. Simply put, He knows us better than we know ourselves. Therefore we canít hide from Him. We need to get this thought into our hearts, for it is the beginning of your becoming realistic about yourself and removes the facade and cover-ups so that the Word of God can cut on us and bind up our wounds so as to heal us and fulfill us and bless us and enrich us and strengthen us and bring more grace into our lives and forgiveness and restoration and joy. Hebrews 4:16 ďLet us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Ē This is the end result of being operated upon by the Word of God, it will strengthen our faith and confidence in God, because we will know that we are right before Him and that we are not playing games or hiding behind a facade and we know that God knows us and we are allowing Him to work on and operate on our lives to make us more like Jesus. We will come to Him for more of His grace and help, because we know that we need His help and we know that we canít do it without Him and that He is wants to be everything to us and we believe His Word. We can then say that these verses are true in our lives, they are real to us. John 15:5 ďÖfor without me ye can do nothing.Ē Hebrews 11:6 ďÖfor he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.Ē We will and do believe and so we seek Him. Therefore we have this faith in Him. 1 John 5:14-15 ďAnd this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.Ē
Those that are married, consider this. A husband writes a letter to his wife. She then tells herself, well, I love my husband, but I donít want to bother to read his letter. Would we not consider that inconsistent and not the action of one who really loves her husband? Is it any different if we say that we Love God but not enough to read His letter to us and hear His instructions for us and know His will for our lives? If you are not interested in His Word or in knowing Him when the only way to know Him is through His Word, then what kind of love is that? But we have this problem. We donít want to read that which we think will expose our sin and bring conviction. So we donít consider it important enough. If you really love someone though, even if reading that which they have wrote us will make us feel uneasy, we will read it anyway because of that love. But the only way to approach the Word of God because of the enemies efforts to stop the Word from bearing fruit in our lives is to approach the Word prayerfully, asking God to help us, to open our eyes to see and our ears to hear and to remove any obstructions to our understanding and cause us to hear and know what He wants us to know that we might obey and please Him. Then we will find out the reality of John 7:17 and God will make His Word real to us and reveal Himself to us through His Word. ďIf any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.Ē
We have to look into that mirror and then internalize it and apply it to our lives. We donít need to ask if that is Godís will for us to read and learn the Word of God and to understand it and find ourselves in it. We donít have to ask if it is Godís will for us to obey and live by the Word of God. For a believer, that is the reality of what it means to believe upon Him.
