The Vision of Elisha’s Servant
With all who seek to live a godly life, who love the Lord Jesus, who fear the Lord - Satan and his foot soldiers, (like Michael Moore, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry…) the enemies of the cross will do all in their power to derail, detract and ridicule our dependence upon the living God.
Know that the higher your visibility in the spiritual realm, the fiercer Satan’s attack will be. The greater your influence and impact on the lives of others, the more frantic will be Satan’s work to undermine your life and testimony for God.
Elisha was such a person! We could make a similar message from the lives of numerous men of God, but this one is about Elisha and His servant. Elisha’s life was God centered and his authority was the Word of God. His ultimate purpose was the glory of God and his life goal was to please the Lord God of Israel. So, it is not surprising to see that Satan was constantly on his trail, undermining him at every opportunity, but God gave victory after victory and even the ultimate victory. First the full story.
2 Kings 6:8-23 “Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice. Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not show me which of us is for the king of Israel? And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about. And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria. And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them? And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master. And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.”
Time and again Elisha warned the king of Israel of the plans of the king of Syria. That heathen king thought that it was one of his own people that had betrayed him to the king of Israel. Then when he learned who it was, he thought he could go capture Elisha and stop his warnings to the king of Israel. But this heathen king and his troops couldn’t touch the servant of God (as could be said of Elijah and others also) and after God’s intervention; the Syrian’s stopped their efforts and left Israel alone. Notice how Elisha told the king to bless these men who came for his life by feeding them and then sending them back home to their master.
The army of Syria was sending terrorists into Israel and Elisha was constantly exposing and uncovering these plots, protecting Israel from the Syrian plots. The king was ready to kill the traitor to his plans, but one of his men knew of Elisha and his ability (not really understanding that it was the God of Israel behind it all). He spoke the truth. Basically he was told that there was a spiritual bugging device everywhere he went and recorded all that he spoke and was telling it to Elisha the prophet. The God of Israel was on his trail, exposing his every move and Baal was no match for Jehovah, the God of Israel. But they didn’t yet understand that.
Today, the devil and his foot soldiers are misleading, misguiding, distorting the truth, twisting the facts, trying to destroy the righteous, to undermine God’s people, they are cheating and lying and attacking and retreating like a terrorist, working against God’s people, but they cannot and will not win in the end. Ultimately those under the authority of God the Father will be victorious. Notice I didn’t say all professing Christians will be victorious. Those who come under the cover of the almighty will be protected by the shield of faith, not those I term as unbelieving, disbelieving believers (a separate message). Those who come under the shadow of Jehovah will emerge strong. 2 Kings 6:13 “And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.” But when the man of God is walking with God, in obedience to God, he is untouchable, (as Daniel and others) unless God is finished with his life and it is for his glory and honor that he allows death (as Stephen’s martyrdom).
Let us consider the foolishness of unbelief. We have people running around telling us that we are too intelligent to believe the stories of the Bible that are not true, but it is they who are so absolutely dumb not to believe the Bible ‘stories’. The foolishness of unbelief is shown here. If their God is protecting Israel from his plots, would he not protect his prophet from his foolish tricks and puny efforts to get him? That is logic, but what the king of Syria did isn’t good logic. If God is revealing His secrets to those who fear Him, will he not also guard them? If God is supernaturally protecting His people, will He not also protect His messenger, His servant, the prophet? Secular minded people cannot understand the power of God or the realm of the supernatural. They can never appreciate what they cannot see with their eyes or value what is beyond the veil. 1 Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
But sadly there are many Christians who act and think like secular minded unbelievers. Sadly, many Christians do not understand, much less experience the power of the supernatural in any way, though they think they do with their charismatic foolishness that calls pumped up flesh, the spirit of God. Then look at the lives of so many who shout the loudest, jump up and down and act like fools on Sunday. How do they live and act the rest of the week. Do they walk in victory, do they walk, act and talk as children of God, as ambassadors for Christ, or look like any other unbeliever in their speech and things they do and places they go and movies they watch. There are many professing Christians who do not even believe in a literal Devil or a literal eternal hell fire of judgment. They have been deceived and lied to by false preachers, false shepherds and so don’t even believe the Bible or that it is infallible and pure and trustworthy. That is NOT Christianity, but only a façade of Christianity.
So, therefore the Bible says the secret of the Lord and the secret of victory is with those who fear Him. Psalm 25:14 “The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will show them his covenant.” Notice He did not say the Secret of the Lord is with those who go to church or with the pastor or bishop of the church or those who claim to be Christians, but those who fear Him, those who have surrendered their lives to Him and walk with Him, who have sought Him with all their hearts and who are dependent upon Him, not just when they need Him and are in trouble and want a way out, but all the time. Also, note that it is they to whom he shows his covenant! Part of the covenant that God makes with His people, is a covenant of protection and provision, but it only to those who do their part and obey the covenant requirement! Genesis 17:1, 10 “I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect…. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep.” There is always a provision of entering into covenant with God and even Christianity is a covenant relationship, but most professing Christians don’t know or understand that and have not entered into covenant with God and so God doesn’t protect them supernaturally as he does those who are in covenant with Him. But that is another message.
Satan’s motive like that of the Syrian king, who is a type of the Devil, is to go after God’s people, those who live Godly lives. Satan’s motive like, that king, is to undermine the confidence of the godly and to rid the nation and church of the godly. And yet the very secret of victory is with the godly. But they don’t seem to understand this spiritual principle.
Actually, they are not capable of understanding this because they are spiritually blinded by Satan, the god of this world. 2 Corinthians 4:4 “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” Also, those who don’t want the truth, God blinds as them as in 1 John 12:40 “He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.” 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” Simply, the ungodly unbelievers, for the most part, don’t want to hear or know the truth, they simply like the lie they are living. They prefer their lie to the truth, because to admit the truth would mean they are enemies of God who need to repent of their ways or face God’s judgment. So, they would rather deny the truth than face it because they love sin.
It is no different that the majority of Muslims, as those in Turkey who live near Mt. Ararat. They know there is a large object on that mountain that is unexplainable and doesn’t belong there, but they don’t want to know the truth or have it proven that that is the ark of Noah, because their Koran says that it is on another mountain and that would prove the Koran false and that they server a false God and that in reality, the God of the Jews and Christians, whom they hate as enemies or Islam, is the true God and that it is the Bible that is correct in it’s history and not the Koran. They don’t want truth and are not willing to face truth, they prefer a lie and in this case a lie with eternal consequences they are not willing to face. Many would rather go to a godless hell than humble their pride to admit that they are wrong and humble before the true God, who demands something they are not willing to accept. It is because of pride, pride of race, pride of religion… pure unmitigated pride, a pride that leads to destruction. Proverbs 11:2 “When pride cometh, then cometh shame:” Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Back to our story. In this particular period of time in Israel’s history, they were no more godly as a nation than America is today, but there was a godly man in Israel who was sold out to God. God only needs one totally sold out to Him. Ezekiel 22:30 “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” Scripture tells us that God looks for a man to stand in the gap, not thousands. We don’t need a million people to march on Washington, but one who will stand in the gap, who is godly, to lead God’s people in a way that would change the course of history by changing the course of our nation. President Bush lost any opportunity to do that and has succumbed to trying to please the enemy, as by saying that Islam is a peaceful religion hijacked by a few thugs. That is total nonsense. Islam from the beginning has been a religion of might and the sword and Mohammed was by all standards a terrorist in his own day. You can’t lead the people rightly have God’s blessing and miraculous provision if you lie to the people and make such compromises to please the enemy. That is a normal spiritual principle. 2 Kings 6:14 “Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.”
Yet we also know there is a time coming when wickedness will have come to the full, when the cup of iniquity is full, that God says that if the greatest men of faith and prayer; were here alive and interceding for the nation, they would only save themselves. Jeremiah 7:16 “Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.” There is a time that the only hope for a nation, the only way it can be saved from judgment is by 2 Chronicales 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Satan knows that if he can destroy the godly leadership, he will and can destroy a nation. If he can undermine the godly leadership, he will undermine the rest of the society. That is why it is of utmost importance that we uphold President Bush daily for Satan wants to bring him down more than anything. Also true men of God, who stand for the truth are the ones Satan truly wars against, not the compromisers, who actually help his cause.
If Satan can remove the president we have, who has asked for prayer, guidance and wisdom from God, though he has made some mistakes and failed as we all have, Satan will have won the final battle for America, to take it, to overthrow the righteous remnant and their testimony, to outlaw their faith, to make this a godless heathen secular nation to the core. And in the end, those who have sold out their faith for a golden cow, voting for wicked men like Kerry, who stand against all that is godly, fighting for homosexual special rights and abortion at it’s worst, will find in the end they will have nothing, neither their golden cow (as civil rights) for which they sacrificed their faithfulness to the Word of God and to His Ten Commandments and godly morals, nor will they have their freedom, but end up slaves in the end, if even alive after the judgment of God falls upon this nation for it’s wickedness. And the church will be to blame for not standing for the truth, seeking God nor obeying Him, but seeking after the things their flesh wanted and following their lusts and deceptions which will enslave them.
The king of Syria gets his chariots and horses and sends his republican guard, the best of his fighting men, looking for the man of God in the night, but Satan always miscalculates God’s power and the power of godliness and Satan always loves to work in darkness where he can’t be seen. That is why most wickedness is done in the dark.
But Romans 8:31 says, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” The key is that God be for us, as He was with our forefathers. That God fight our battles for us and stand with us as He did in Samuel’s day, “that all this assembly may know that… the battle is the LORD'S” 1 Samuel 17:47.
Elisha’s assistant was with Elisha. He lived with him, went everywhere he went and saw firsthand God’s hand working through Elisha, experiencing the deliverance of ELisha from the hands of his enemy again and again, seeing supernatural intervention time after time but that didn’t change his heart nor give him courage. There are people who go to church today, hearing one sermon after another, seeing God’s power time and again, looking like Christians and know godly people, but as soon as they are confronted with evil, they panic and don’t know what to do. They melt like butter and quake at the knees. Elisha’s assistant looked out and saw the chariots and horsemen and thought they were done for and about to die, so they might as well get out the white flag and surrender. But fear is not of God, but instead it is one of Satan’s primary tools against believers. When you entertain fear and live in fear you are giving Satan the upper hand in your life and giving him power over you. 2 Kings 6:16 “And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”
Those who fear God, need not fear man. Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Proverbs 29:25 “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” Psalm 118:6 “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”
Elisha’s servant hears the words of Elisha, goes out and observes that the Syrian army has them surrounded and goes back and says, “what are you talking about?” There is no army with us? We are all alone. Nobody is with us. This is it. It’s like an old Lone Ranger episode. He and Tonto are always together everywhere, working together and then one day they were standing in a valley looking up in the mountains and everywhere they looked, their were Indians. And the Lone Ranger looks at Tonto and says, “Tonto, we’re in real trouble.” Tonto thinks about it for a moment and then replies, “What is that we, white man.” He must have learned from the French (and yes I know I am being sarcastic).
Elisha’s assistant was saying, wake up and look, no one is with us and we are surrounded by the treacherous Syrian army, it’s time to be realistic and face the facts. But those who fear the Lord, even in the heat of battle, see victory even before it happens when no one else can see it. Job saw his greatest vision in his worst circumstances of his life. Daniel was delivered not from the den of lions, but from in it. The three Hebrew children were delivered not from the fiery furnace, but from within the fiery furnace. Paul wrote his greatest epistles from a Roman dungeon. John saw the glorified Christ in exile in Patmos.
In the midst of what appears to be the enemy having the upper hand, God’s man sees the unseeable, believes the unbelievable, hears the inaudible and thinks the unthinkable because he believes and has faith in his God. The problem is that we often want others to see what we see but they can’t. 2 Kings 6:17 “And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” Notice how gracious Elisha is. Then when this young mans sees what Elisha sees by faith, he says ‘whoa.’
The secrets of victory, the victory of the Lord is with those who fear Him. Skirmishes may be all around us, but we have already won the battle. 2 Kings 6:23 tells the story. “And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.”
When the king of Israel was willing to kill these foreigners who hated Israel, Elisha said no, feed them. That is what we are doing today, feeding and clothing even our enemies who hate us. IT is what we have always done. No other nation, after conquering an enemy as we did Germany or Japan, then pay to rebuild that nation to make them friends. Some are just ungrateful for the blessing they receive from you, as France, whom America delivered from their enemy not once, but twice and now they are rewriting their history, like America, to say that we did not deliver them from Hitler. They don’t want to admit and many of the younger generation in France no longer know America’s part in their history that would give them a positive impression of us. (sorry for all the rabbit trails)
The question is do you fear the Lord or are you afraid of the Lord. There is a great difference in these two. Many are afraid of the Lord, terrified of Him. If you are terrified of the Lord, most likely, you don’t know Him, you don’t know His character and you have not been walking with Him. That is the condition of those described in Revelation, who are terrified of God, yet hide from Him, curse Him, shake their fist at Him and refuse to repent. Revelation 9:20-21 “the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Revelation 16:11 “And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.”
But perfect Love, His love, casts out all fear, as in terrifying fear. 1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” Fearing the Lord is to respect, honor, revere, that it is our desire to please Him. Those who are afraid of the Lord are afraid of death because their faith is not where it should be. If you are walking in His love, you are not afraid of death, which is to stand before Him because you have confidence before Him because you know that your sins are forgiven, washed by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ because you have put your faith in Him and asked Him to come into your life and be your Lord and Savior. He is either Lord and Savior or neither. Acts 5:9 “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” But nobody quotes that verse any more because it implies that obedience is a prerequisite to salvation. Hmmm! Could it be it’s true? Then many deceive themselves and are not what they think they are.
